Getting to Know Garth Breytenbach and His Signature Foodie Style
Field + Forest’s™ signature, grain free Game + Lamb recipe, draws its flavour from both cooking techniques as well as the finest hand-selected ingredients. These ingredients are steam cooked to perfection in their own natural juices with no added water.
If game and lamb-based dishes are some of your favourites, we have something you may want to read about. To get a taste of which wines pair best with your game or lamb meals, we sat down with Garth Breytenbach, personality, actor, comedian, blogger and foodie.
Before we get to the meat of it, let’s kick off with a few questions about the only subject we love more than food and nutrition… Dogs!
Q: We’ve seen your dog, Archie, making enjoyable appearances on your social media. When did Archie become part of your family?
A: Archie has been part of the family for just under 5 years now.
Q: Can you tell us how you picked Archie’s name?
A: We wanted to call him something unique and for some reason came up with Archibald, and hence shortened it to Archie.
Q: What three words would you use to describe Archie’s personality?
A: Moody, lovable and picky.
Q: What’s Archie’s preferred Field + Forest™ signature recipe?
A: We started out on the Game + Lamb variant, he seems to love that recipe, so we’ve just stuck with that one.
Q: What do you think Archie’s favourite thing about tucking into a bowl of Field + Forest™ food is?
A: He most certainly loves the fact that it’s grain and cereal free as he doesn’t scratch anymore. He has really sensitive skin which has pretty much disappeared since being on Field + Forest™.
Q: Having started out in entertainment as an actor and branching out, you’ve earned your place amongst South Africa’s top foodies. What inspired you to follow your foodie dreams?
A: I have always loved cooking and eating out, it was a something I fell into as I started getting invited to foodie events, and meeting more of the foodie crowd. So, I thought I’d set up a few social channels to share my experiences where I could chat to and share these with fellow foodies.
Q: Archie has a favourite Field + Forest’™ signature recipe, do you have a favourite cuisine?
A: I like most cuisines and eat pretty much anything, so it’s hard to choose just one, but I do love the Asian flavours most. Fragrant flavours like lemongrass, chilli, soya, sesame oil and ginger etc. really get the taste buds fluttering. With that being said, I really enjoy most types of food as long as it’s made with love and tastes good.
Q: You know your way around culinary delights quite well, if you were to enjoy a lamb or game/venison-based meal yourself, which types of wines would you be pairing with these to complement, and why?
A: Well, red meats go better with the red wines so I would pair it with something nice and balanced, but also something slightly heavier bodied as the meat flavours will be quite strong and need something to match that. I’d pair lamb dishes with a lovely Syrah, and for venison – a Malbec. There are some really great ones going around at the moment, and it’s nice not stick to the usual Cabernet Sauvignon.
Q: Are their certain wines that pair better with certain spices or seasonings to bring out the flavour of a lamb or game-based meal?
A: There are indeed. I would use hardier herbs and spices for game and lamb such as bay, rosemary, sage, juniper berries, garlic and clove or all spice for warmth. These flavours go best with wines that can stand up to those flavours, like a peppery Cabernet or velvety Syrah.
Q: And finally, which of the Field + Forest™ signature recipe’s sounds most appetising to you.
A: All of them sound pretty good but would probably stick with what Arch is having – the Game + Lamb flavour. The combo of the two meats and flavours sounds really great.
