The perfect winter picnic with your dog
If you’re experiencing a bit of winter cabin fever, it’s time for you and your pet to get out of the house, stretch your legs and have a picnic in the sun. It will do you both a world of good. We’ve compiled a list of dog parks around the country which are great for winter picnics as well as the necessary exercise your dog needs to complement their healthy, grain-free diet. Always remember to keep your pet’s safety and socialisation in mind when visiting dog- friendly spots.
Eastern Cape: Sards Bark Park, Port Elizabeth
Set in the breath taking and tranquil valley of Sardinia Bay, on Sardinia Bay Road, Port Elizabeth. This spot is a secure environment where dogs are allowed both on and off leashes, and offers plenty of space to get your exercise. Post-walk you can enjoy a cup of coffee at the K9 Coffee bar.

Gauteng: James and Ethel Grey Park, Johannesburg
Providing a lovely escape for you and your dog from the hustle and bustle of Joburg, this oasis can be found on Melrose Street, Atholl Oaklands. Enjoy a leisurely walk through this 36-hectare dog park, followed by lazy picnic as you take in the landscape along to the sound of the flowing Sandspruit.

KwaZulu -Natal: La Mercy Beach, Durban
Durban’s beachfronts provide some of the loveliest places to walk your dog. Nestled at the top of the Dolphin Coast on South Beach Road, you and your four-legged companion can enjoy your activity next to the sound of rolling waves in KwaZulu-Natal’s forgiving winter climate. There’s a scenic picnic area on the beach, so pack a basket of goodies to enjoy after your walk!

Mpumalanga: Happy Hound, Nelspruit
Set on a beautiful, rolling farm just a short distance from The Kruger National Park, day visitors to Happy Hound can bring along well socialised pets for a meander along, specially laid-out trails in through indigenous bush with its’ exquisite views. Once you’ve walked and savoured the sights, you can enjoy a breakfast at the scenic restraint on-site.

Western Cape: Deer Park, Cape Town
This picturesque park is situated right near the heart of Cape Town in the Table Mountain National Park, Vredehoek. You and your best friend will find yourself among Indigenous plants, alongside a softly flowing river, surrounded by cheeping birds and beautiful scenery.
There are a variety of walks you can take, from casual meanders to the more challenging climbs that head up into the mountain, providing lots of distraction for energetic dogs. Don’t forget to pack the picnic blanket and snacks for this one!
