The Important Characteristics of Premium-Quality Dry Dog Food
Your canine companion’s diet is just as important to his wellbeing as the love you give the animal. However, with so many brands of pet kibble on the market, choosing the right food for your pet is not always easy. We understand that just about every company claims to provide quality dog food. To help you make an informed buying choice, we briefly look at the characteristics of quality dog food.
Look for kibble that closely resembles the ancestral diets of dogs. You want quality meat to be included. The kibble should be well balanced, with protein being the main ingredient. Protein from chicken, ostrich, game, lamb, salmon, and tuna can form part of the diet. If the kibble only includes protein from white meat, it will not be sufficiently balanced. As such, look for dog food that includes protein from various types of meat.
Grain-free may seem like a new buzzword, but if your animal has allergies or is sensitive to various types of food, you will want quality grain-free dog food. The kibble can include vegetables and fruits to ensure sufficient fibre in the diet, as it will help to support digestive health.
Quality dog food, such as our kibble, includes zinc, phosphorus, and various vitamins, in addition to amino acids and fats. A holistic approach to the diet ensures that all aspects of your dog’s dietary requirements are addressed.
What Should Be Included?
Quality protein is the most important, but the kibble should also include a moderate level of animal fat for energy and flavour. In addition, it should have a sufficient level of EPA and DHA, good moisture content, and if it includes a supply of vegetables and fruits it should mimic what the dog would have found in its prey’s stomach.
You want dog food that contains as few as possible fillers or none at all. It does not help to feed your pet kibble that makes it feel full but does not add any nutritional value.
Make sure that the brand lists at least one named animal protein. When you buy Field + Forest™ kibble, you will notice that various protein sources are named. This is because we are proud of the protein sources. Only quality meat is used, and all the sources of protein can be traced. The meat sources come from South Africa and include Karoo lamb.
Quality dog food should be as fresh as possible. Do not think that just because it is dry kibble it will be safe to use for years to come. Always buy pet kibble with the expiry date a few months away. With imported food, the kibble has to be transported by ship, stored at the harbour, stored in the wholesale warehouse, shipped to the retailer, and then stay on the shelf until it is sold.
When you buy from a company that produces the kibble locally, you are assured of freshness, as the time from production to use is relatively short. Our brand of quality dog food meets and exceeds the requirements discussed.
